Tarik Tihan, MD, PhD, is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pathology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. His expertise lies in neuropathology, particularly in pediatric brain tumors and their molecular underpinnings. He earned his MD from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine (1985) and a PhD in Biochemistry (1989). He completed residency in anatomic pathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and fellowships at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Stony Brook University.
His research focuses on understanding brain tumor biology, molecular diagnostics, and improving diagnostic accuracy in resource-limited settings. He collaborates globally to advance neuropathology standards and address healthcare disparities. Tihan is also dedicated to education, mentoring, and international outreach, emphasizing global scientific integration.
Key contributions include work on pilomyxoid astrocytomas, CNS tumor classification (WHO 2021), and diagnostic challenges in low-resource regions. His articles span molecular profiling of tumors, clinical outcomes of surgical interventions, and global health equity in pathology. He actively participates in multidisciplinary teams and international organizations like the Asian Oceanian Society of Neuropathology.
