Tarek Mostafa is an Associate Professor in Education and Public Policy at the School of Education, University of Birmingham, and Director of the BA Education and BA Education and Sociology Programmes. Previously, he served as a policy analyst at the OECD Directorate of Education and Skills (PISA team) and a Senior Research Associate at University College London’s Institute of Education. His research focuses on education policy, public/social policy, assessment, equity in education, and survey/quantitative methods. He has contributed to international studies such as PISA and TIMSS, analyzing trends in STEM education, teaching practices, and teacher satisfaction.
His work emphasizes the intersection of policy and practice, including studies on gender disparities in STEM careers, effective pedagogical strategies, and the role of longitudinal data in informing educational reforms. He has co-authored reports for the UK government on national educational performance and has published extensively on methodological issues in survey data linkage and missing data strategies.
Prof. Mostafa’s expertise spans international education comparisons, curriculum reform, and the socio-economic dimensions of educational outcomes. His research highlights the importance of contextual factors like classroom discipline, teacher training, and policy coherence in enhancing student performance and equity.
