Taras Gerya is a Professor and Study Advisor in Geophysics at the Institute of Geophysics, ETH Zurich, where he has been employed since 2004. His research focuses on numerical geodynamic modeling, subduction zone dynamics, mantle plumes, and planetary evolution. He has supervised 74 students and postdocs and authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles, including 13 in high-impact journals like Nature and Science.
- 1984 MSc in Geology, Polytechnic University of Tomsk
- 1990 PhD in Petrology, Moscow State University
- 1999 Habilitation in Petrology, Moscow State University
- 2008 Habilitation in Geodynamics, ETH Zurich
Gerya's research explores thermomechanical modeling of subduction zones, continental collision, and mantle plume dynamics. His work emphasizes 3D numerical simulations to understand seismic cycles, crustal evolution, and planetary tectonics. Recent articles highlight topics like mountain belt formation and stagnant lid tectonics across planetary bodies.
His scientific awards include the Golden Owl Price for teaching excellence (2008), recognition as a Top 50 Russian Scientist Abroad (2008), and Best Reviewer for AGU and Nature journals (2015-2016). He has delivered 5-10 invited seminars annually and contributed to outreach activities like ETH Study Week 2015.
