Tara Tober is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), affiliated with the College of Letters and Science. Her academic focus lies in Cultural Sociology, Collective Memory, and Inequality, with a particular emphasis on comparative/historical sociology and Ireland studies. She teaches courses including Introduction to Sociology, Cultural Analysis, Social Stratification, and Sociology of Globalization.
- Ph.D. from the University of Virginia
Her research explores how societies navigate difficult historical legacies. Her doctoral work examined post-WWII memory in Ireland, while her current research investigates mass shootings in the U.S., analyzing media coverage and official responses. This work interrogates how definitions of mass shootings shape policy debates and how gendered narratives (especially around masculinity) intersect with gun violence.
Her publications critically examine media discourses around mass shooters, the intersection of economic precarity and gun ownership, and the cultural construction of authenticity in Southern foodways. These studies highlight connections between structural inequality, cultural narratives, and public policy.
Teaching and advising form a core part of her academic engagement, reflected in her broad course portfolio spanning foundational sociology to specialized topics like social movements and globalization.
