Tara Ison is a Professor of Fiction in Arizona State University’s Creative Writing Program. She holds an MFA in Fiction and Literature from Bennington College. Her academic work focuses on creative writing pedagogy, narrative structure, and interdisciplinary storytelling.
Education: MFA in Fiction and Literature, Bennington College.
Research Interests: Ison’s creative and scholarly work explores themes of identity, historical memory, and the intersection of personal narrative with cultural history. Her novels often blend historical fiction with contemporary social commentary, as seen in At the Hour Between Dog and Wolf (2023), a WWII-era narrative about a Jewish girl in Vichy France. She also writes essays and short fiction that examine the power of storytelling to interrogate cultural norms and individual experience.
Publications & Awards: Recipient of National Endowment for the Arts fellowships (2008, 2020), Yaddo residencies, and the 2015 PEN Southwest Book Award. Her work has appeared in Tin House, The Kenyon Review, and O, The Oprah Magazine.
Teaching & Service: Taught at Washington University, Northwestern, UC Riverside, and others. Currently leads workshops in fiction writing and creative nonfiction at ASU. Active in creative writing program reviews, scholarship judging, and community writing initiatives.
