Dr. Tara Richman is an NHMRC EL1/Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation Senior Fellow at the University of Western Australia (UWA), affiliated with the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research and holding an adjunct appointment at the Telethon Kids Institute. She completed her PhD in 2014 at UWA, focusing on mitochondrial gene expression and disease models.
Her research centers on mitochondrial biology, particularly CRISPR-based models of energy dysfunction, with emphasis on platelet and megakaryocyte structure/function, and synthetic biology approaches to rewire energy metabolism. Key areas include mitochondrial gene expression, protein biosynthesis, and metabolic stress impacts.
Recent work spans mitochondrial dysfunction in platelet biology, insulin resistance mechanisms, and cardiovascular disease. Her articles highlight interdisciplinary approaches to mitochondrial-related disorders.
- Grants: NHMRC Multi-omic Landscape of Platelet Function; Mito Foundation Equipment Grants; WA Health-funded projects on viral infection and mitochondrial disease models.
- Awards: NHMRC Senior Fellowship, Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation Senior Fellowship.
Her lab collaborates internationally to advance mitochondrial genetics and disease modeling, contributing to UN SDGs through biomedical innovation.
