Jessica Baker is a Researcher affiliated with the UWA Medical School and the UWA Centre for Medical Research (affiliated with the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research). She completed her PhD in 2024 at The University of Western Australia under Prof. Aleksandra Filipovska and Dr. Tara Richman, focusing on mitochondrial gene expression and its impact on disease. Her undergraduate studies included a Bachelors in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2018) and French, followed by an Honours in Medical Research (2019) at the same institution.
Her research focuses on mitochondrial biology, gene expression, and their roles in cardiovascular disease, blood coagulation, and energy homeostasis. She has contributed to studies revealing mitochondrial gene expression’s role in platelet function and the effects of mitochondrial mistranslation under metabolic stress. Her work bridges molecular mechanisms with clinical implications in diseases like cardiovascular disorders and mitochondrial disorders.
Awarded the UWA 3MT Runner-Up & People's Choice Award in 2022, her research also addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and medical advancements. She served as Director of the UWA Centre for Medical Research committee from 2020 to 2023, contributing to institutional governance and research coordination.
