Tanya Sweet is a Professor and Technical Director in the Department of Performing Arts - Theatre and Dance at Christopher Newport University. She holds an MFA in Theatre from the University of Illinois and a BA in Theatre Arts/Design from Beloit College. Her expertise spans stage mechanics, CAD, scenic engineering, and technical direction.
Her professional credits include Off-Broadway productions such as Visions in the Funhouse (Lincoln Center) and regional theater collaborations like Bus Stop and The Lion in Winter. She has served as Technical Director for Hope Summer Repertory Theater and the Public Education Foundation, designing scenery for numerous productions.
Ms. Sweet has received notable accolades, including the 2021 Pillars Award and the 2019 Provost’s Excellence in Teaching Award. She has technical directed over fifty shows at CNU and contributed to designs such as Triumph of Love and Dancing at Lughnasa. Her teaching focuses on technical theater disciplines, stage management, and playwriting.
