Tanya Elder is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication, Media and Culture at the American University of Paris (AUP), where she contributes to the MA in Global Communications program. She holds a Ph.D. in Technology and Social Change from Linköping University (1997), a Sociology degree from Lund University (1988), and a BA in Political Science from Amherst College (1987), specializing in Development Theory and African Studies.
Her research and teaching focus on development communications, sustainable development practices, environmental anthropology, and media ethnography. She regularly teaches courses such as Development Communications, Sustainable Development Practicum, and Environmental Anthropology, emphasizing global perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches.
Elder’s work bridges academic theory with practical applications, particularly in NGO practices and cultural studies. She has designed immersive learning experiences, including field courses like FACETS OF FRANCE and INTERPRETING CULTURES, which connect classroom theory with real-world contexts. Her courses often address contemporary challenges in global communication, environmental justice, and cultural representation.
