Tanu Sankalia is a tenured full professor in the Department of Art + Architecture at the University of San Francisco, coordinating the Urban Studies Concentration within the Environmental Studies Program. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from CEPT University (Ahmedabad, India) and a Master of Urban Design from UC Berkeley.
- Research focuses on architecture and urbanism, including interstitial spaces, public space governance, and global urban dynamics in India, Latin America, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Co-director of the Center for Research, Artistic, and Scholarly Excellence (CRASE) and co-founder of El Círculo, a critical theory reading group.
Key publications include Urban Reinventions: San Francisco’s Treasure Island (2017) and articles in Journal of Urban Design, Journal of Urban History, and City. His work bridges architectural history with contemporary urban challenges, emphasizing equity, climate resilience, and spatial justice.
Teaching includes urban planning, architectural history, and design courses that integrate critical theory with practical applications. Recent research explores hybrid urban spaces, climate adaptation policies, and the intersection of cultural memory and urban form.
