Prof. Dr. Tanja Scheer is Professor of Ancient History at the University of Göttingen since 2011, holding the Chair of Ancient History previously occupied by Prof. Dr. Gustav Adolf Lehmann. She previously served as Professor of Ancient History at Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (2004-2011) and held teaching positions at the University of Basel, University of Bielefeld, University of Leipzig, and University of Mannheim.
Her academic formation includes:
- Magister Artium (1989) from Ludwig Maximilians University Munich
- Doctorate in Ancient History (1992) with minors in Classical Archaeology and Medieval History
- Habilitation at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (1998)
Scheer's research explores intersections of religion, gender, and environment in ancient Greek societies. Her work pioneers environmental history approaches to antiquity while examining gender dynamics and religious practices, significantly advancing cultural historical methodologies in classical studies.
Her major recognitions include:
- Heisenberg Fellowship of the German Research Foundation (2001-2004)
- Ausonius Prize of the University of Trier (2001)
- Habilitation Scholarship from the Gerda Henkel Foundation (1994-1996)
- Doctoral Prize of the Munich University Society (1992)
Scheer has directed significant research initiatives including the Arbeitsstelle Antike Religion und Alte Geschichte (Workshop for Ancient Religion and Ancient History) founded at Oldenburg University in 2005. Her international research collaborations include appointments at Harvard University's Center for Hellenic Studies and Dumbarton Oaks. She maintains active leadership in academic societies including the Academy of Sciences at Göttingen and Mommsen Society.
