Prof. Dr. Tanja Michael is a full Professor and head of the Chair of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at Saarland University. She is based at Campus A1 3, Saarbrücken, and leads the STARS Laboratory, focusing on stress-related mental disorders such as PTSD and anxiety disorders.
Her research integrates behavioral, physiological, and cognitive approaches through longitudinal and experimental studies, aiming to develop and evaluate innovative therapeutic interventions. She leads major DFG-funded projects, including the NET study on aerobic endurance training as an adjunct to narrative exposure therapy for traumatized refugees, and research on insomnia treatment in PTSD patients.
Her work also extends to youth mental health, as seen in the Guck-Hin-Studie, which investigates the psychological impact of global crises (e.g., climate change, war, pandemic) on adolescents in Saarland, Germany.
The research themes across her projects emphasize trauma, emotional regulation, self-efficacy, and societal participation, with a strong focus on improving mental health interventions through multimodal and integrative approaches.
She is actively involved in teaching and supervising Bachelor’s, Master’s, and project theses in Clinical Psychology. Her department offers a specialized Master’s program in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy.
Prof. Michael collaborates with the Institute for Sport and Preventive Medicine (led by Prof. Tim Meyer) and participates in interdisciplinary research. While no personal email is listed, research-related inquiries can be directed to project addresses such as projekt-guckhin@uni-saarland.de.
