Tanja Jovanovic is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Wayne State University. Her research focuses on translational fear conditioning paradigms in trauma-related disorders, utilizing psychophysiological measures (e.g., fear-potentiated startle), neuroimaging (fMRI), and genetic analysis to study urban trauma in high-risk populations and intergenerational risk transmission.
- Disease/Disorders: PTSD, anxiety, depression
- Species: Human
- Key Methods: fMRI, skin conductance, neuroimaging, psychophysiology
- Collaborators: Arash Javanbakht, Kerry Ressler (Harvard), Jennifer Stevens (Emory)
Her recent publications (2023-2025) with the ENIGMA-PGC PTSD consortium examine cerebellar volume reductions, neurocardiac circuits, and computational approaches to PTSD classification. She has contributed to studies on racial discrimination's neural impact, hormonal influences on fear learning, and transgenerational trauma mechanisms.
Current projects include investigating urban trauma's biological pathways, refining TMS treatment targets using neuroimaging, and analyzing social determinants of mental health in vulnerable populations. Her work bridges clinical psychiatry, neurobiology, and computational approaches to improve trauma survivor outcomes.
