Taner Doğan is a Lecturer in Digital Media and Communications at Queen Margaret University (QMU), where he serves as Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Media and Communications and BA (Hons) Digital Marketing and Public Relations. He is affiliated with the School of Media, Communication and Performing Arts and is a full member of the Centre for Culture in Society research center. Additionally, he holds a Visiting Fellow position at the European Institute, London School of Economics (LSE).
His research focuses on the intersection of communication, politics, and religion, with a regional emphasis on the Middle East and North Africa. Key areas of interest include digital culture, technology and society, populism, visual art, and political communication. His work explores how digital media influences identity formation and the transformation of political discourse, particularly under neoliberal and authoritarian contexts.
Dr Doğan earned his PhD in Journalism from City, University of London, with a thesis analyzing the political communication strategies of Turkey’s Justice and Development Party (AKP). He also holds an MA in Global Media and Postnational Communication from SOAS, University of London, and conducted research at the American University in Cairo. His professional experience spans broadcast and digital journalism in the UK, Germany, and Turkey.
He teaches courses such as Media Production: Online Journalism, Media Freelancing Project, Media and Communication Industries, Persuasive Communication, Political Communication, and Media, Politics and Culture. He supervises postgraduate and doctoral research in communications, digital media, politics, and journalism, and welcomes PhD students in his core research areas.
Dr Doğan is the author of the book Communication Strategies in Turkey (I.B.Tauris/Bloomsbury, 2021) and has been interviewed by media outlets including Index on Censorship, L’Express, RTVE, and Middle East Eye. He is active on Twitter at @tnrdogan.
