Taneli Raivio

Taneli Raivio serves as Professor in the Department of Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, where he leads the Raivio Group and contributes to the STEMM - Stem Cells and Metabolism Research Program. He holds dual appointments as Supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine and the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Research at HUS Children and Adolescents, and holds the title of Docent at Clinicum.

His research focuses on pediatric endocrine disorders, particularly congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and precocious puberty, with significant contributions to understanding hormonal impacts on bone development and growth. His molecular work explores genetic variants affecting pituitary and pancreatic hormone expression, while his clinical trials investigate aromatase inhibition and growth prediction methodologies. The Raivio Group integrates clinical epidemiology with stem cell research, notably in kisspeptin neuron generation.

Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal a strong emphasis on translational endocrinology, combining clinical trials in pediatric bone health with molecular genetics of endocrine disorders. His work demonstrates consistent focus on puberty disorders across demographic trends, hormonal mechanisms, and therapeutic interventions, with increasing integration of stem cell models since 2023.

Professor Raivio currently directs two major research projects: the Sigrid Jusélius Foundation-funded Raivio Juselius 2025-2028 (€58,000, 2025-2026) and an Academy of Finland Academy Project on Generation of kisspeptin neurons from human pluripotent stem cells (2025-2029). He has supervised 8 doctoral theses and scholarly works through the Biomedicine and Clinical Research doctoral programs.

As leader of the Raivio Group within the STEMM consortium, he collaborates across clinical and basic science domains, maintaining active partnerships with HUS Children and Adolescents and international endocrine research networks. His team employs multidisciplinary approaches spanning clinical epidemiology, molecular genetics, and stem cell modeling to address fundamental questions in reproductive endocrinology.
