Taneli Kukkonen is a Professor of Philosophy and Global Network Professor at New York University Abu Dhabi, part of the Arts and Humanities division. His academic journey includes prior faculty roles at the University of Victoria (Canada), University of Jyväskylä (Finland), and University of Otago (New Zealand). He holds MTh, MA, and DTh degrees from the University of Helsinki.
Research focuses on classical Arabic philosophy, Aristotelian and Platonic traditions, with additional interests in philosophy's intersection with pop culture, Islamic classical culture, and early science history. Notable works include Ibn Tufayl: Living the Life of Reason (2014) and over 30 articles on Arabic philosophy and the Aristotelian tradition.
Teaching spans courses like Nature and Human Nature, Classical Arabic Philosophy, and Global Ethics. His scholarship bridges ancient Mediterranean thought with medieval Islamic intellectual history, often examining themes like metaphysics, ethics, and the philosophy of religion.
Publications highlight contributions to journals such as Journal of the History of Philosophy and Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy, alongside chapters in major handbooks like Cambridge History of Medieval Philosophy. His work frequently analyzes key figures like Ibn Sīnā, al-Ghazālī, and Ibn Tufayl, exploring their impact on Western and Islamic intellectual traditions.
