Marco Signori is an Assistant Professor in the History of Medieval Philosophy at IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, affiliated with the PhiBor Research Unit (Philosophy on the Border of Civilizations and Intellectual Endeavours). Born in Novi Ligure in 1993, he holds a BA and MA in Philosophy from the University of Pisa (2015, 2017), a Diploma from the Scuola Normale Superiore (2017), and a PhD in Medieval Philosophy from Scuola Normale Superiore (2022), supervised by Amos Bertolacci. His doctoral work focused on an English translation and commentary of al-Ghazali's Maqāṣid al-Falāsifa. At IMT, he has held research roles, including a position in the IMT4Career program (2021–2022) on Dante’s philosophical sources and a grant on the manuscript tradition of Maqāṣid (2022–2023).
His research centers on Arabic-Islamic philosophy, the Latin reception of Arabic thought, and key figures like Avicenna, al-Ghazālī, and Albert the Great. He explores intercultural philosophy, the interplay of philosophy/theology/literature in medieval milieus, and the history of sciences branching from medieval philosophy. His work also addresses textual and diagrammatic analysis in medieval manuscripts, as well as Dante’s philosophical underpinnings, particularly in the Commedia.
Signori’s publications analyze al-Ghazali’s engagement with Avicennan philosophy, medieval translations of Arabic texts, and the intellectual legacy of figures like Gundissalinus and Albert the Great. He has contributed to journals like Medioevo and Documenti e Studi, focusing on doctrinal debates, terminological conflicts, and intercultural philosophical exchanges. His research bridges Arabic, Latin, and Italian medieval philosophical traditions.
His work on Dante includes studies of Dante’s use of Aristotelian natural philosophy and the scientific foundations of his poetic vision. He emphasizes the methodological challenges of reconciling philosophical systems with religious doctrine, particularly in cross-cultural contexts.
