Tammy Bullwinkle is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Microbiology at The Ohio State University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a B.S. from Nazareth College (2004) and a Ph.D. from the University at Buffalo (2010). Her expertise focuses on microbiology education, particularly in molecular microbiology instruction and curriculum development. She actively contributes to undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, including designing inquiry-based experiments for the Molecular Microbiology Lab course, and serves on the Department’s Curriculum Committee.
Her research background spans molecular mechanisms of protein synthesis, bacterial stress responses, and bacteriophage biology. She collaborates with institutions like the University at Buffalo and international teams to investigate translation fidelity, amino acid stress adaptation, and genetic code mistranslation. Her work bridges fundamental biological research with innovative educational methodologies.
Bullwinkle oversees lab instruction, mentors Graduate Teaching Assistants, and integrates cutting-edge research findings into classroom materials. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes inquiry-based learning and hands-on experimentation to enhance student engagement in microbiology. Despite no listed awards, her academic contributions are evident through impactful peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals like Journal of Biological Chemistry and Nucleic Acids Research.
