Tamara Vorobjova is an Associate Professor in Immunology at the Department of Immunology, Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Tartu. She has been affiliated with the University of Tartu since 1979, progressing from Research Assistant to her current position as Associate Professor. Her current appointment is 0.80-0.90 FTE, indicating substantial ongoing research and teaching responsibilities.
Vorobjova earned her Medical Doctor degree (cum laude) from the University of Tartu Medical Faculty in 1978, followed by post-graduate training at Tartu University Hospital. She obtained her Candidate of Science (PhD) in internal diseases from the University of Tartu in 1985, and her Doctor of Medicine (cum laude) in 2001 with a dissertation on immune response to Helicobacter pylori and its association with chronic gastritis.
Her research spans immunology, biomedicine, and gastroenterology, with particular focus on celiac disease, diabetes, and mucosal immunology. Vorobjova's work explores the relationship between immune responses and gastrointestinal disorders, examining biomarkers, cytokine profiles, and intestinal barrier function. Her research has significant clinical implications for understanding autoimmune mechanisms in digestive diseases.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the immunological aspects of celiac disease, often in conjunction with diabetes. She investigates biomarkers like LGR5, CD71, CD138, and CXCR3 in intestinal mucosa, examines immune responses to gut bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Clostridium butyricum, and studies intestinal permeability in relation to autoimmune conditions. Her work bridges basic immunology with clinical applications, particularly in maternal-child health contexts.
- University of Tartu '100 semesters in the University of Tartu' (2022)
- Award of European Helicobacter Study Group for poster presentation (2004)
- Award of Medical Faculty of University of Tartu (1999)
- Science Award of the Government of the Republic of Estonia to research group (1994)
Vorobjova has supervised at least one master's thesis on interleukins in children with atopic dermatitis and celiac disease. She serves as Principal Investigator on the ongoing project 'Immune mechanisms in adulthood diabetes' (2020-2025) with €1,299,025 funding. She has participated in numerous completed research projects related to immunology, diabetes, and celiac disease, with funding from Estonian Research Council, European Commission, and other sources. Additionally, she serves on the editorial board of World Journal of Gastroenterology and reviews for several prominent journals including APMIS and Journal of Experimental and Clinical Cancer Research.
As a member of multiple professional societies including the Estonian Society for Immunology (since 1984), Estonian Society of Gastroenterology (since 1980), and the Board of the Baltic Immunological Society (since 1991), Vorobjova maintains active engagement in the international immunology community. Her research is conducted within the Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine at the University of Tartu, contributing to Estonia's biomedical research infrastructure.
