Tamara J. Walker is an Associate Professor of Africana Studies at Barnard College, Columbia University, specializing in the history of slavery, gender, and racial formation in Latin America, its legacies in the modern era, and global Black mobility. She is an award-winning author, public intellectual, and founder of The Wandering Scholar nonprofit.

Her research explores how historical systems of oppression shape contemporary global Black identities through works like Exquisite Slaves and Beyond the Shores. She also investigates race and visual culture in Latin America and the interconnected history of slavery and piracy.

As co-founder of The Wandering Scholar, she focuses on making international travel accessible for underrepresented youth and explores travel’s impact on racial identity through her podcast and writing.
