Joshua D. Rothman is a Professor and Chair in the Department of History at the University of Alabama. His research focuses on the history of race, southern history, and the intersection of capitalism and slavery in 19th-century America. He holds a PhD from the University of Virginia (2000).
Current projects include co-directing the Freedom on the Move database documenting fugitive slave escapes and researching the 1848 Pearl schooner escape attempt. His work explores topics like domestic slave traders, the economics of slavery, and interracial family dynamics.
Rothman has received numerous accolades, including the Harriet Tubman Book Prize (2022 finalist) and multiple fellowships from institutions like the Gilder Lehrman Center and the American Antiquarian Society. He teaches courses on the American South, slavery in popular culture, and graduate seminars on Reconstruction and the Gilded Age.
His publications span monographs such as Flush Times & Fever Dreams (2012) and articles in journals like the Journal of Southern History. He also contributes to public history through lectures and documentary projects.
