Tamara Dubowitz is Chair and Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health. With extensive experience in social epidemiology, she leads research examining how neighborhood environments and public policies impact health outcomes, particularly among marginalized populations. Her work bridges academic research with practical policy applications to address health disparities.
Dr. Dubowitz's educational background includes:
- 1996: BA in Anthropology/Urban Studies from University of Pennsylvania
- 2000: MSc in Anthropology from University of Pennsylvania
- 2001: SM in Maternal and Child Health from Harvard School of Public Health
- 2005: ScD in Social Epidemiology/Public Health Nutrition from Harvard School of Public Health
Dr. Dubowitz's research focuses on the role of place and geography in shaping health outcomes for marginalized and minoritized populations. Her work examines how neighborhood investments - from supermarkets in food deserts to greenspace and parks - impact diet, food security, sleep, cardiometabolic outcomes, and cognitive health. She specializes in natural experiment research design to study neighborhood change, with particular expertise in implementing rigorous methodology within real-world settings. Her research has been supported by multiple NIH R01 grants examining neighborhood change and its impact on health disparities.
Analysis of Dr. Dubowitz's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on health disparities in low-income, predominantly African American communities. Her work examines how neighborhood conditions, policy interventions, and social determinants affect health outcomes including diet, sleep, obesity, and cognitive aging. A notable trend is her increasing focus on cognitive health and Alzheimer's disease risk in disinvested Black neighborhoods, while maintaining her longstanding research on food environments and neighborhood revitalization.
Dr. Dubowitz has secured significant research funding through multiple NIH R01 grants, including:
- R01CA149105: Does a New Supermarket Improve Dietary Behaviors of Low-income African Americans?
- R01CA164137: Impact of Greenspace Improvement on Physical Activity in a Low Income Community
- R01HL122460: Neighborhood Change: Impact on Sleep and Obesity-Related Health Disparities
- R01CA149105: Urban Revitalization and Long-Term Effects on Diet, Economic, and Health Outcomes
- R01AG072652: Longitudinal Examination of Neighborhood Disadvantage, Cognitive Aging, and Alzheimer's Disease Risk
With over 89 publications, Dr. Dubowitz has made significant contributions to understanding how neighborhood environments shape health outcomes. Her research employs natural experiment designs to evaluate neighborhood change, with particular attention to methodological challenges in gathering baseline data and implementing robust research in real-world settings. She has developed expertise in community-based research that engages residents and addresses health disparities through quantitative analysis of neighborhood effects.
