Dr. Talia Shoval is a Research Fellow in Politics (Political Theory) at the University of Edinburgh, affiliated with the Edinburgh Political Theory Research Group, CRITIQUE, and the Edinburgh Earth Initiative. Her work bridges normative political theory, moral philosophy, and environmental ethics, focusing on reimagining Just War Theory through non-anthropocentric lenses to address nonhuman casualties in warfare.
- Education: PhD in Politics (Political Theory) from University of Edinburgh (2025), MA in Political Science (Summa Cum Laude) from Tel-Aviv University (2018), BA in Political Science and Communication (Magna Cum Laude) from Tel-Aviv University (2014).
Her research interrogates the ethical dimensions of war through environmental immunity and posthumanist theory, challenging traditional anthropocentric frameworks. She explores how natural facts might inform moral relations with the nonhuman world in conflict contexts, advocating for expanded just war criteria that protect ecosystems. Her publications and presentations analyze concepts like nonhuman combatant status, environmental resistance, and the moral implications of ecological destruction during warfare.
Recent works emphasize the integration of environmental ethics into military doctrine, critiquing the principle of discrimination in targeting. Talia’s pedagogical contributions include co-developing climate crisis-focused curricula and promoting interdisciplinary environmental education. She has received scholarships including the Alice Brown PhD Scholarship and multiple honors at Tel-Aviv University.
