He held the Edward Kremers Professorship and later became a Regents Professor. His career spanned over 40 years, during which he pioneered drug delivery research, membrane absorption studies, and prodrug development. He founded the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at KU, the Alza Institute for Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and Oread Laboratories. Higuchi trained over 90 pre- and post-doctoral students and published 187 papers by 1967. His legacy includes the Higuchi Research Prize and the Takeru Higuchi Memorial Lectures.
Education:
- Bachelor’s in Chemistry (1939), University of California, Berkeley
- Ph.D. in Physical and Organic Chemistry (1943), University of Wisconsin
Research Contributions: Higuchi’s work bridged physical chemistry and pharmaceutical science, focusing on dosage forms, tablet compression physics, and transdermal drug delivery. His innovations in biodegradable compounds and dermal delivery systems revolutionized pharmaceutical technology. He co-founded Interx Research Corporation and Oread Laboratories, fostering economic growth in Kansas through academic-industrial partnerships.
Awards & Recognition:
- Higuchi Research Prize (established in his honor)
- Edward Kremers Professor Chair (1964)
- Founder of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry
- Recipient of symposia honors from his students/colleagues (1981, 1984)
Labs & Institutions: Directed the Alza Institute (1968–1972), established Oread Laboratories (1987), and left a legacy through the Higuchi Memorial Lectures series.
