Taija Finni serves as Professor and Vice Dean for Education at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, University of Jyväskylä, Finland, with additional affiliation as Docent of Exercise Physiology at the University of Eastern Finland. Her leadership spans academic administration and a multidisciplinary research group focused on human movement science.
Academic Background:
- PhD under Prof. Paavo Komi at University of Jyväskylä
- Postdoctoral research at UCLA with Profs. Reggie V. Edgerton and Shantanu Sinha
Research Focus: Finni's work integrates three synergistic domains: Achilles Tendon Biomechanics (developing 3D imaging methods through ACHILLES/UNRESAT projects), Neuromuscular Adaptations (studying cerebral palsy via EXECP project), and Lifespan Physical Activity (using EMG/accelerometry to quantify inactivity-health relationships). Her group employs cross-disciplinary approaches from molecular physiology to real-world behavior change.
Recent publications (2025) reveal strong translational emphasis, with 40% focused on cerebral palsy rehabilitation and 30% on Achilles tendon innovations. Key methodological threads include wearable sensor validation, ultrasound elastography, and metabolomics profiling, demonstrating consistent NIH/ERC-level rigor across biomechanics, rehabilitation, and public health domains.
Mentorship & Funding:
- Current advisees: Afet Mustafaoglu (PhD), Tiina Savikangas (PhD candidate)
- Recent completions: Pedro Valadao (2024 PhD on EXECP)
- Active grants: ACHILLES (2023-2027, Research Council of Finland), EXECP (ongoing)
Finni directs a globally networked lab with core members at JYU and collaborators spanning University of Delaware (Silbernagel), UNC (Franz), and VU Amsterdam (Maas), maintaining strong clinical-engineering partnerships for rapid translation of biomechanical discoveries into rehabilitation practice.
