Professor Otso Ovaskainen is an Academy Professor at the University of Jyväskylä's Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on developing statistical and mathematical methods for ecological data analysis, with emphasis on joint species distribution modeling, DNA-based species identification, and agent-based modeling. He leads the ERC-Synergy project LIFEPLAN, which aims to survey global biodiversity using DNA, audio, and image data. Current projects include biodiversity monitoring through AI and wireless technologies, and hyperautomation in citizen science integration.
Research Interests
- Ecological data integration and statistical methodology
- Species distribution and community dynamics
- Biodiversity genomics and digital twin development
- Urban and Arctic ecology
Active Projects
- "Safeguarding biodiversity and carbon-rich forest networks in Europe" (EU, 2025-2029)
- "Biodiversity Digital Twin" (EU, 2022-2025)
- "LIFEPLAN Global Biodiversity Sampling" (EU, 2021-2026)
His work bridges computational methods with ecological theory, emphasizing practical applications in conservation and policy. The Predictive Community Ecology (PredCom) group under his leadership develops innovative tools for biodiversity analysis.
