Tadhg Begley is the Distinguished Barton Professor of Chemistry at Texas A&M University, holding the Robert A. Welch Foundation Chair. He leads the Begley Research Group, focusing on the mechanistic enzymology of complex organic transformations in vitamin biosynthesis. His academic roles include teaching and research leadership in the Department of Chemistry, with affiliations at the ILSB laboratory.
Prof. Begley earned his B.Sc. from the National University of Ireland (1977) and Ph.D. from Caltech (1983). His career includes postdoctoral work at the University of Geneva and MIT, followed by faculty positions at Cornell and Texas A&M since 2009.
Research Interests:
- Vitamin biosynthesis mechanisms (thiamin, pyridoxal phosphate, molybdopterin, menaquinone)
- Enzymology of radical SAM systems and flavin-dependent reactions
- Organic chemistry of biological pathways and cofactor assembly
Awards
- NIH MERIT Award
- AAAS Fellow
- Merck Faculty Development Award
- Honorary D.Sc. from National University of Ireland
Advising & Grants: Mentored over 20 graduate students and postdocs. Notable advisees include recent PhD recipients Isita (2019), Sanjoy (2019), and Sumedh (2019). Active in securing NIH and foundation grants for biosynthetic studies.
Labs/Teams: Directs interdisciplinary research integrating molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and organic synthesis. Collaborates with structural biologists (e.g., Ealick lab) and crystallography experts.
