Tadashi Ishikawa serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of Central Florida, specializing in nineteenth and twentieth-century Japan and East Asia. His scholarly work examines intersections of gender, law, empire, and mobility within transnational Asian contexts.
Education:
- Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from The University of Chicago (2015)
- M.A. in East Asian Studies from Washington University in St. Louis (2007)
- B.A. in Law from Chuo University (Tokyo, Japan) (2001)
His research critically analyzes gendered power structures through legal frameworks in imperial and colonial settings, with current projects investigating Cold War-era mobilities between Japan and Southeast Asia. Methodologically, he combines judicial archive analysis with press records to reveal circular gender dynamics that simultaneously challenged and reinforced societal norms.
Publications demonstrate sustained focus on gendered legal histories across imperial formations, particularly examining how family law operated as a mechanism of colonial governance while generating contested spaces for women's agency. Key thematic threads include the tension between legal theory and practice, transnational circulation of gender norms, and intersections of intellectual/manual labor with mobility.
