Tab Betts is an Assistant Professor in Higher Education Pedagogy at the University of Sussex's School of Education and Social Work. He holds dual roles as a Lecturer and learning technology consultant, serving as International CPD Lead for the School and Course Leader for the Fundamentals of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education module. Previously, he led the MA in Education at Sussex and served as Director of Online Learning and Pedagogical Innovation for The Parliamentary Centre of Asia, developing online courses for Southeast Asian parliaments. He co-founded the global Active Learning Network, recognized with a 2021 Global Academic Development Good Practice Award.
His research focuses on active learning, inclusive pedagogy, and innovative educational technologies. Notable contributions include the 2022 book 100 Ideas for Active Learning, exploring collaborative environments and experiential strategies. His work bridges theory and practice, addressing challenges in global higher education through creative methodologies.
Award highlights include the 2023 National Teaching Fellowship and multiple Sussex and Brighton awards for innovative teaching. Beyond academia, he advises institutions worldwide and has led initiatives in China, Japan, Nigeria, and beyond. Fluent in Mandarin, he has managed academic departments in Chinese universities and delivers consultancy across Asia, Europe, and Africa.
