TU Shiu Hong Simon

Dr. TU Shiu Hong Simon serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Japanese Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, contributing to both undergraduate and postgraduate programs within the Faculty of Arts. His interdisciplinary academic background bridges Japanese Studies, Anthropology, and Design, positioning him uniquely to examine cultural phenomena in contemporary Japan.

His educational journey includes a Ph.D. in Japanese Studies from CUHK, an M.A. in Japanese Studies from Sophia University in Tokyo, an M.A. in Anthropology from CUHK, and a B.A. in Design (Culture and Theory) from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This diverse foundation informs his approach to cultural analysis.

Dr. TU's research primarily investigates Art Festivals in Japan, with special focus on the Setouchi Triennale's impact on rural communities, Rural Revitalization in Japan through cultural initiatives, and Modern Japanese Visual Culture. His ethnographic approach examines how large-scale art projects transform island communities and create sustainable development models. His work demonstrates how cultural events serve as catalysts for community engagement and economic renewal in depopulating regions.

His publications reveal consistent focus on the intersection of contemporary art, community development, and cultural policy in Japan, particularly examining how artistic interventions reshape rural landscapes and social structures. His translation work on Takashi Murakami's writings further demonstrates engagement with theoretical frameworks of contemporary Japanese art.

As part of CUHK's Department of Japanese Studies, Dr. TU contributes to the department's mission of exploring Japan-Hong Kong cultural relationships and participates in the department's research initiatives examining cross-cultural exchanges in East Asia.
