TAN Teck Meng

Professor TAN Teck Meng was a pivotal figure in the establishment of Singapore Management University (SMU), serving as its founding Deputy President (1998–2001). He transitioned to teaching in SMU’s School of Accountancy after his administrative tenure, earning acclaim for his teaching excellence, including multiple awards and induction into SMU’s Teaching Hall of Fame. His research focused on corporate governance, entrepreneurship, and financial accounting. He was the first Singaporean recipient of the Wilford L White Award (1997), recognizing his contributions to small and medium enterprise development.

He spearheaded collaborations such as the Wharton-SMU Research Centre and played a central role in designing SMU’s campus and four-year broad-based curriculum. Beyond academia, he served on numerous boards of hospitals, schools, and government bodies. He established awards like the Tan Tee Chee and Tsan Kah Ngooh Award for co-curricular excellence and the Tan Teck Meng Gold Medal for academic distinction in accountancy. His legacy includes shaping SMU’s identity as a vibrant, student-centric institution.

Honored with the Public Service Medal (2009) and Service to Education Award (2007), his career spanned leadership roles at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Institute of Management (SIM). He held a Bachelor of Accountancy from the University of Singapore and a Master of Commerce from the University of New South Wales.
