T. M. Makori is an Assistant Professor in Globalisation and Development at Maastricht University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, specifically within the Department of Technology and Society Studies. His research focuses on the socio-economic and historical impacts of resource extraction in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly examining the interplay between artisanal mining, colonial legacies, and contemporary social change. Makori holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Toronto and has held postdoctoral fellowships in Human Geography and African Studies.
He leads two major research projects: one analyzing historical entanglements in Congo’s mining dynamics (culminating in his forthcoming book *Rich Soils, Empty Hands*) and another evaluating due diligence programs in eastern DRC through collaborations with organizations like Ulula Canada and the International Peace Information Service. His work bridges anthropology, geography, and development studies.
Publications span topics such as the ethics of consumption in mining communities, temporal narratives of decline, and the socio-environmental impacts of due diligence initiatives. Makori teaches in Maastricht’s Globalisation and Development Studies programs and actively contributes to interdisciplinary research networks addressing resource governance and urban re-arrangements.
