Sören Mattsson is a Professor of Radiation Medical Physics at Lund University. He is a pioneer and founder of the School of Medical Physics in Lithuania. His research focuses on the impact of ionizing radiation on the environment, medical applications of radiation, and radioecology. He has authored over 300 articles in international journals.
He was appointed as an official representative of the Swedish Radiation Protection Institute to develop radiation medicine strategies in the Baltic States. Key projects include two Swedish-government-funded initiatives (2002-2005 and 2003-2006) that established Lithuania's medical physics training framework and a Master's program at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU).
He received the Honorary Doctor title from KTU for contributions to scientific collaboration, infrastructure development, and radiation safety initiatives. His work includes monitoring radioactive pollution near the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and fostering international partnerships.
Notable contributions include donating scientific literature and equipment to KTU, enabling access to research facilities at Lund University and Malmö Hospital, and advancing radiation safety protocols in Lithuania.
