Associate Professor Sylvie Alonso is a tenured faculty member in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the National University of Singapore (NUS), affiliated with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. She leads research on host-pathogen interactions, focusing on RNA viruses like dengue, Zika, and enteroviruses. Her work includes developing dendritic cell-targeted vaccines and investigating viral determinants of virulence. Alonso holds a PhD from the University of Lyon and has conducted postdoctoral research at institutions in France and the U.S. before joining NUS in 2004. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013.
Education:
- PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Biology, University Claude Bernard Lyon I, France (1998)
- Postdoctoral training at Pasteur Institute of Lille (France) and Cornell University (USA)
Research Interests:
Her lab explores viral pathogenesis, vaccine design, and host immune responses. Key projects include:
- Development of a dendritic cell-targeting vaccine platform for influenza, dengue, and coronaviruses (collaborating with Monash University)
- Investigating neurotropism mechanisms in Enterovirus-A71
- Studying dengue virus glycosylation and NS1 protein roles in pathogenesis
Collaborations: Partnerships with academic and private sectors globally, including Monash University and institutions in Australia, Europe, and the U.S.
Grants & Labs: Leads projects funded by Singapore's research agencies, focusing on vaccine development and antiviral strategies. The lab employs advanced models for viral infection and immune response studies.
