Sylvia Wiegand is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Nebraska, where she has held positions since the 1970s. She earned her Ph.D. in Commutative Algebra from the University of Wisconsin in 1972 under Lawrence Levy. Her research focuses on commutative algebra, module theory, and non-Noetherian rings. She has published over 40 papers, including collaborations with her husband Roger Wiegand, and supervised five Ph.D. students.
Wiegand served as President of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) from 1997–1999, advocating for women in mathematics and promoting federal support for STEM education. She co-founded the Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics and received the Outstanding Contribution to the Status of Women Award from Nebraska University in 2000. Her professional service includes editorial roles and leadership in the American Mathematical Society and Mathematical Association of America.
Her work spans foundational contributions to module theory, ring extensions, and spectral analysis, with notable results on stable isomorphism of modules and prime ideals in polynomial rings. She remains active in advancing mathematical education and diversity initiatives.
