Sylvia Lim is Professor of Composition at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where she also completed her PhD ('Exploring Organic Decay through Sound'), MMus, and BMus degrees. She additionally teaches composition at The Purcell School. Her research examines sound materiality through phenomenological approaches to decay, perception, and collaborative creation.
Research interests focus on:
- Materiality and physical properties of sound production
- Perceptual psychology in experimental music contexts
- Collaborative methodologies across visual arts, dance, and music
- Extended techniques for traditional instruments
- Spatial and environmental acoustics
- Notational innovation in open-score works
Creative practice demonstrates consistent exploration of temporal perception through:
- Site-responsive sound installations
- Instrumental timbre deconstruction
- Indeterminate compositional frameworks
- Cross-disciplinary collaboration
