Katherine Young is an Assistant Professor of Composition at Emory University whose creative practice centers on electroacoustic music and sonic art. Her work explores expressive timbres, kinetic structures, and collaborative processes through amplified instruments and flexible electronics setups. She creates works ranging from chamber pieces to large-scale installations, with frequent examination of ecological relationships and identity formation through sound.
Education includes a DMA in Composition from Northwestern University, MA in Composition from Wesleyan University, and dual BA in Comparative Literature and Bassoon Performance from Oberlin College and Conservatory. Research interests span experimental notation, improvisation systems, and the integration of idiosyncratic electronics in contemporary music.
Major compositions include the monodrama 'When stranger things happen' for Ensemble Dal Niente, 'Diligence Is to Magic as Progress Is to Flight' installation-performance work, and the 'Mycorrhizae' series exploring solo instrumental capabilities through shared electronic materials. Her work has been commissioned by major institutions including the LA Phil, Chicago Symphony's MusicNOW, and Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt.
