Sylvia Akar is a Visiting Researcher at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Arts, affiliated with both the Department of Languages (African and Middle Eastern Languages) and the Department of Cultures (Middle Eastern Studies). Her research focuses on Arabic language pedagogy, Islamic studies, cultural anthropology, and sociopolitical dynamics in the Middle East and Africa. She is actively engaged in interdisciplinary projects and public lectures addressing contemporary issues in religion, education, and cultural identity.
Key research interests include Quranic studies, the role of Arabic in cross-cultural communication, and the intersection of law, gender, and health in Muslim societies. Akar has organized and participated in numerous international conferences, including the Nordic Conference on Middle Eastern Studies and the International Conference of Islamic Legal Studies. She has also contributed to educational policy discussions through her work with Finland's Opetushallitus (National Board of Education).
Her academic activities span academic visits to institutions like the University of Leiden and the University of Cairo, peer reviews for journals such as Teologia.fi and Studia Orientalia Electronica, and roles in editorial boards and national/international committees. Notable projects include the 2017–2019 initiative Kulttuuri- ja katsomussensitiivistä opetusta ja ohjausta kehittämässä, focusing on cultural and perceptual frameworks in education.
Akar’s work emphasizes bridging academic research with public discourse, as seen in her media contributions and popular seminars on topics like Islamic reform and Middle Eastern societal transformations. She has authored over 20 publications, including articles in Helsingin Sanomat, Duodecim, and Studia Orientalia, and has edited volumes on historical and contemporary religious dynamics.
