Syka Josef is a Professor of physiology at the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University and holds a professorship at the Institute of Experimental Medicine ASCR, where he directed the Department of Auditory Neuroscience from 1994 to 2001. He served as Chairman of the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic from 2000 to 2008 and was Deputy Prime Minister of the Government Council for Research and Development from 1993 to 2000. His research focuses on experimental medicine, particularly in auditory neuroscience. In 2009, he received an honorary doctorate from the Russian Academy of Sciences, which he returned in 2022 in protest against the invasion of Ukraine. He has been a member of the Academy of Europe since 2004, specializing in physiology and neuroscience.
