Syed Mohammad Ali is a Professorial Lecturer of Anthropology, currently serving as a Non-Resident Scholar at the Middle East Institute in Washington D.C. His expertise spans international development, South Asian studies, and research methodologies. He provides country-of-origin expert testimonies for South Asian asylum seekers and contributes weekly op-eds to the Express Tribune, Pakistan’s affiliate of the New York Times.
Dr. Ali holds a Ph.D. from Melbourne University (2013), an M.A. from the same institution (2003), and a B.A. from Tufts University (1994). He has taught courses such as 'Research Methods in Development Anthropology' and 'Methods in Sociocultural Anthropology' across universities in Australia, Pakistan, and the U.S.
His research focuses on governance, marginalization, and disaster response, with notable work on Pakistan’s agricultural policies, US-Pakistan relations, and Afghanistan-Pakistan drug dynamics. His publications blend policy analysis with empirical research, addressing both academic and public audiences.
