Sybil Kelley

Sybil Kelley is an Associate Professor of Science Education & Sustainable Systems in the Educational Leadership and Policy department within the College of Education at Portland State University. She also teaches elementary science methods for the Graduate Teacher Education Program in the Curriculum and Instruction Department.

Her educational background includes:

• PhD in Environmental Science and Management from Portland State University
• Master of Science Teaching from the Center for Science Education at Portland State University

Dr. Kelley's research examines how educational partnerships foster science literacy for K-12 students and teachers, with emphasis on restructuring educational and food systems for sustainability. Her community-centered approach prioritizes underserved schools in North and Northeast Portland.

With over 15 years of experience across elementary to postsecondary settings, she has developed educational programming through community organizations and school partnerships. Her founding of the Emerson Street Garden in King Neighborhood (1995) exemplifies her commitment to community-based leadership development, gardening, and environmental education as models for sustainable urban systems.
