Svilen Bobev is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Delaware, part of the College of Arts & Sciences. He maintains an active research laboratory focused on the synthesis and characterization of novel solid-state materials.
Dr. Bobev received his B.S./M.S. in 1995 from the University of Sofia and completed his Ph.D. in 2002 at the University of Notre Dame. Following his doctoral studies, he conducted postdoctoral research at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 2002-2004 before joining the University of Delaware faculty.
His research program addresses fundamental issues in the relationships among composition, structure, and electronic properties in complex intermetallic compounds. Current research directions include structural relationships and magnetism in lanthanide element compounds and novel compounds for thermoelectric applications. His work bridges synthetic inorganic chemistry, theoretical chemistry, condensed-matter physics, X-ray crystallography, and materials science, with particular focus on Zintl phases, thermoelectric materials, and magnetic compounds.
Analysis of his recent publications (2024-2025) reveals a strong emphasis on Zintl phases, particularly antimonides and arsenides with rare-earth elements. His research demonstrates significant progress in understanding structure-property relationships in thermoelectric materials, with numerous studies on crystal structure characterization, electronic properties, and thermal behavior. The work increasingly incorporates computational approaches alongside traditional synthetic methods.
Professor Bobev actively mentors students at multiple levels. His research group currently includes graduate student Amanda Childs, postdocs Dr. Hussein Osman and Dr. Sviatoslav Baranets, and undergraduate student Adam Balvanz. The laboratory maintains a tradition of supporting former students who have moved on to pursue their own careers, affectionately referred to as 'the lucky ones' in his group documentation.
The Bobev research laboratory, located on the 3rd floor of the Drake research complex, is exceptionally well-equipped for materials synthesis and characterization. Facilities include a double-glove box with microscope, custom arc-welder/melter, high vacuum line, multiple high-temperature furnaces (up to 1700°C), TG/DSC thermal analysis equipment, Seebeck/resistivity measurement system, bench-top Rigaku MiniFlex powder diffractometer, and a Quantum Design SQUID magnetometer. The lab also maintains extensive computational resources with multiple Mac and Windows workstations running specialized crystallography and materials science software.
