Sverker Sörlin is a Professor of Environmental History at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, affiliated with the Department of History of Science, Technology and Environment. He holds a PhD from Umeå University (1988) and has held visiting positions at institutions like UC Berkeley, Cambridge, and Princeton. His research focuses on global environmental governance, the Anthropocene, and the history of environmental sciences. He co-founded KTH’s Environmental Humanities Laboratory (2012) and leads the ERC-funded SPHERE project on planetary environmental governance.
Key roles include membership in Sweden’s Climate Policy Council (2018–2022), board positions at Sida and Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, and fellowships at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study. Awards include the Lars Salvius Prize (2012), honorary doctorates from Åbo Akademi (2011) and Bergen (2022), and the Harry Martinson Prize (2024). His work bridges historical scholarship with policy advocacy, emphasizing humanities’ role in addressing climate and environmental challenges.
Recent publications explore ice humanities, urban ecologies, and the history of global environmental governance. He actively contributes to public discourse through media appearances and serves on editorial boards of journals like Environmental Humanities and The Anthropocene Review.
