Dr. Svenja Stöven is an Associate Professor in Molecular Biology at Umeå University, where she serves as Project Manager and Directory Coordinator at the European CBRNE Centre. She holds a Dr. rer. nat. from Free University Berlin (1994) and earned her associate professorship in 2007. Her career began with Drosophila-focused research in innate immunity and host-pathogen interactions at Stockholm University and Umeå Centre for Molecular Pathogenesis, later transitioning to applied CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives) preparedness and crisis management.
Her research integrates molecular biology, microbiology, and immunology with societal security, spanning:
- Host-pathogen interactions in tularemia and Francisella species
- Drosophila melanogaster as infection models
- NF-kappaB signaling and immune response mechanisms
- European Union CBRNE resilience and stakeholder networks
- Public health interventions for disease control
Publication analysis reveals evolving focus from fundamental immune mechanisms (2000-2013) to applied CBRNE security and public health (2018-present), with consistent emphasis on infection biology and preparedness planning.
She coordinates major EU projects including:
- PRACTICE (Preparedness Against CBRN Terrorism through Integrated Coordination)
- MELODY (Multidisciplinary Evaluation of Low Dose Radiation Risk)
- CLINF (Climate Change Effects on Infectious Diseases)
- Joint Action TERROR (CBRN Terror Medicine Preparedness)
- Safety & Security Test Arena
Previously, she managed the Biomedical Research School and collaborated with Anders Sjöstedt's team on tularemia vaccine development funded by the NIH.
