Svenja J. Albrecht, MD, MPH, CTropMed is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), School of Medicine. She holds academic roles including Director of the School of Medicine, Medical Director of the Outpatient Antimicrobial Service, and Faculty Expert in TeleECHO Nursing Home COVID. Her expertise spans infectious diseases, tropical medicine, and public health, with a focus on hepatitis C, HIV/HCV coinfection, and antimicrobial therapy. Albrecht completed her MD at UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (2000), MPH at Johns Hopkins (2010), and a research fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Pennsylvania (2006).
Research Interests: Dr. Albrecht’s work addresses viral hepatitis, global health, and healthcare disparities. She leads studies on hepatitis C treatment outcomes, HIV/HCV coinfection, and improving access to care in underserved populations. Her research also explores the impact of integrase inhibitors on liver health and the epidemiology of emerging pathogens like Zika virus.
Publications & Grants: Over 30 peer-reviewed articles highlight her contributions to hepatitis treatment, tropical disease diagnosis, and antibiotic resistance. Key grants include a multicenter study on glecaprevir/pibrentasvir for acute HCV (2021–present) and leadership in the RESTORE and STRIVE clinical trials for antiviral therapies. Her presentations emphasize global health strategies and hepatitis C elimination targets.
Awards & Service: Recognitions include the 2018 Doctor’s Day Certificate of Appreciation and Delta Omega Alpha membership. She chairs committees on clinical competency and program evaluation, and serves on the Mississippi State Department of Health’s HCV Advisory Committee. Albrecht actively volunteers in global health initiatives, including annual medical missions to the Peruvian Amazon.
