Dr. Sven Vitse serves as an Assistant Professor in Modern Literature at Utrecht University's Department of Languages, Literature and Communication within the Faculty of Humanities. He is affiliated with the Institute for Cultural Inquiry, where he conducts research at the intersection of contemporary Dutch literature, gender studies, and literary theory. His work spans from 19th-century Dutch literary classics to cutting-edge computational approaches to modern literature.
Vitse's research primarily focuses on masculinity studies in Dutch literature across historical periods, with particular attention to how gender identities are constructed and represented in literary texts. His scholarly interests encompass affect theory, postmodernism, European identity in contemporary fiction, and the application of machine learning techniques to literary analysis. Recent work demonstrates his engagement with autofiction, neoliberalism's impact on contemporary literature, and animal studies within Dutch-language prose.
His extensive publication record reveals a consistent scholarly trajectory examining Dutch literary production through theoretical frameworks that bridge traditional literary criticism with contemporary theoretical concerns. Vitse's methodology often combines close reading with broader theoretical considerations, particularly regarding affective responses to literature and the political dimensions of literary form. His recent work shows increasing engagement with digital humanities approaches while maintaining strong connections to traditional literary scholarship.
Vitse has been actively involved in the academic community through invited talks on Dutch and Flemish literature, including presentations on Vogelaar, Willy Roggeman, and Ivo Michiels. He has also served as an editor for the journal Parmentier. His scholarly contributions appear in prominent Dutch literary journals such as Dietsche Warande & Belfort, Spiegel der Letteren, and Nederlandse Letterkunde, demonstrating his significant standing within the Dutch literary studies community.
