Sven Bostyn

Sven Bostyn is an Associate Professor of Innovation Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen. He also holds visiting positions at multiple prestigious institutions including the Institute for Information Law (IVIR) of the University of Amsterdam, Universities of Turin and Catania in Italy, and Tongji University in Shanghai. Additionally, he regularly lectures at Harvard University Law School and serves as an expert at the WIPO Academy.

Dr. Bostyn is one of Europe's most prominent authorities in patent law, particularly in life sciences including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, and genome editing (including CRISPR-Cas). His expertise also extends to regulatory aspects of drug development for both small molecules and biologics, orphan drug regulation, and intellectual property aspects relating to plants and plant variety rights.

His research focuses on the intersection of intellectual property law with life sciences innovation, pharmaceutical development, and regulatory frameworks. Dr. Bostyn has made significant contributions to understanding patentability requirements for biotechnological inventions, supplementary protection mechanisms for pharmaceuticals, and the challenges posed by new breeding techniques in agriculture. His work addresses critical questions about balancing innovation incentives with public access to medicines and agricultural technologies.

Dr. Bostyn's recent publications demonstrate a clear trend toward examining the societal implications of intellectual property systems, particularly during health emergencies and in relation to inclusivity. His work spans multiple disciplines including law, medicine, biotechnology, and agricultural science, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of modern intellectual property challenges.

Dr. Bostyn has advised multiple governmental bodies including the European Commission (serving as Chair of their Expert Committee on biotechnology and genetic engineering from 2013-2016), the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences, and both Belgian and Dutch governments on patent policy. He recently led a study commissioned by Dutch ministries regarding protection mechanisms for pharmaceuticals.

He regularly presents at international conferences on topics including IP protection in life sciences, pharmaceutical patents, supplementary protection certificates, regulatory exclusivities in drug development, and IP issues relating to software and artificial intelligence, demonstrating his active engagement with both academic and policy communities.
