Sven Beckert is the Laird Bell Professor of History at Harvard University. He co-chairs Harvard’s Program on the Study of Capitalism and the Weatherhead Initiative on Global History, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

His research focuses on 19th-century U.S. history, particularly the history of capitalism in economic, social, political, and global dimensions. His work connects slavery to capitalist development and analyzes labor, democracy, and transnational networks. Recent publications highlight his exploration of cotton as a global commodity, the role of imperialism in industrialization, and working-class formation in urban America.
Notable awards include the Bancroft Prize and Pulitzer Prize finalist recognition for Empire of Cotton. He has directed the Harvard College Europe Program and lectured internationally.
Beckert’s teaching includes courses on modern capitalism, American and European capitalism, labor history, and the Gilded Age. He collaborates with students on projects like Harvard and Slavery: Seeking a Forgotten History.
