Svein Sundby is a Norwegian marine scientist affiliated with the Institute of Marine Research and the Hjort Centre for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics. He holds an Adjunct Professor position at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen (2003-2012), where he developed the course GEOF 230 on physical-biological couplings. His career spans four decades, focusing on physical-biological ocean processes, plankton dynamics, and climate change impacts on marine ecosystems.
- Education: Cand. real (1974) and Dr. philos (1995) from University of Bergen
Research Interests center on physical-biological ocean interactions, fisheries oceanography, and climate change effects on marine ecosystems. He contributed to major international programs like GLOBEC and IMBER, and co-authored the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report.
Scientific Leadership: Directed the Climate and Fish Programme (2007-2010), developed the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, and coordinated the Cod and Climate Change (CCC) regional program under ICES. He supervised 15 graduate students and led pollution assessment projects for petroleum and mining industries.
Publications highlight trends in marine ecosystem dynamics, fish egg buoyancy, and climate-fisheries linkages. His work bridges oceanographic modeling and empirical field studies, emphasizing vertical distribution mechanisms and connectivity between populations.
