Suzanne García-Mateus is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education and Leadership at California State University – Monterey Bay and Director of the Monterey Institute for English Learners (M.I.E.L). She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Bilingual and Bicultural Education from the University of Texas at Austin, alongside a B.A. in English Literature (UT Austin) and an M.A. in Elementary Education (University of Michigan).
Her research focuses on the intersection of race, language, ethnicity, and class in dual language classrooms, particularly examining bilingual identity construction through discourse analysis. Notable projects include studies on Latinx family language policies and pre-service teachers' language ideologies.
Key publications include works in Modern Language Journal, Journal of Language, Identity, and Education, and The Urban Review. She won the 2018 AERA Dissertation Award for her work analyzing a gentrifying two-way immersion program's impact on students' bilingual identities.
